What exactly are the benefits of acoustic panels?

What are the benefits of acoustic panels? – That's a very good question, one we'll address in detail in today's blog post. But first, let's briefly explain what an acoustic panel actually is, because otherwise we can't answer this question. So, what are acoustic panels?

What are acoustic panels – and what are their benefits?

Acoustic panels are special wall panels that are installed as soundproofing. These panels can be made from a wide variety of materials, are usually fairly easy to install, and reduce noise pollution within a room. This can be especially useful if you live in a noisy environment, have neighbors with noisy children, or simply prefer silence. As the name suggests, they consist of individual panels that are screwed or glued to the wall or ceiling.

The function of acoustic panels is quite simple: They absorb sound waves at specific wavelengths. Imagine a bare concrete wall hit by a sound wave. The sound wave is simply reflected back into the room until it hits another wall or object, off which it "bounces." However, if the wall is decorated with acoustic panels, the special properties of these panels ensure that the sound wave is not reflected back into the room. This prevents the scattering of sound waves, reduces noise pollution, and promotes relaxation. That's the theory, but do acoustic panels actually do anything – do they deliver what they promise?

I have noisy neighbors – what are the benefits of acoustic panels?

Do you have thin walls and noisy neighbors right behind you? This can not only be annoying, but also cause constant stress. However, being loud is usually not forbidden – especially during the day. So, what can you do? Acoustic panels can provide relief. When it comes to reducing noise, several studies now show how effective the installation of panels is against noise pollution:

  • The study “Impact of Acoustic Panels in Open Plan Offices” examined the influence of acoustic panels in office environments, particularly how they absorb the sound of conversations and other noises and thus reduce noise levels.
  • The study “Noise Reduction in Domestic Spaces” investigated how acoustic panels can be installed in living spaces to reduce disturbing noise from neighbors and demonstrated their effectiveness in reducing noise transmission through thin walls.
  • According to a report by Sound Zero , mass-loaded acoustic panels also help minimize sound transmission between adjacent rooms, especially at frequencies typical of household noise.

In principle, there is now sufficient evidence of the benefits of acoustic panels – not just against noisy neighbors, but against noise of any kind. But what else can acoustic panels be used for?

What are the benefits of acoustic panels for thermal insulation?

Acoustic panels are primarily designed for sound absorption and dampening, but they can also contribute to thermal insulation. The materials acoustic panels are made of—such as foam, felt, other fabrics, and wood—often have insulating properties, as they impede airflow and thus slow heat exchange between rooms. This works by blocking the air layers in a room, thus keeping the heat in. But simply adding extra thickness to the panels strengthens the wall and slows heat exchange. This effect can be used and noticed particularly effectively when acoustic panels are attached to an exterior wall. The room cools down more slowly—and you save on heating costs.

Before you get too excited, though: Acoustic panels don't provide complete insulation. They aren't designed for thermal insulation and shouldn't be purchased exclusively for that purpose, as there are better solutions available. However, thermal insulation is a nice side effect worth mentioning. A particularly effective approach is combining insulation materials with acoustic panels.

How do you attach acoustic panels?

Have you purchased acoustic panels for soundproofing and are now wondering how best to attach them to the wall? Then check out our detailed installation instructions . Here we explain in detail what you need to pay attention to and how to attach the panels so they'll serve you well for many years. In short, here's how:

  1. You need glue or screws, a spirit level and a saw.
  2. Measure the wall and cut the panels to the size you need.
  3. Depending on the wall and substructure, you now screw or glue the panels to the wall according to the instructions.

But be careful : If you plan to attach your wall panels to the ceiling, screws are absolutely essential. The adhesive doesn't have enough strength to hold the panels to the ceiling.

The effect of acoustic panels on body and mind

Now that we've clarified the key points of acoustic panels, we'd like to take a closer look at what exactly acoustic panels do for you – namely, your own health. The health risks of noise pollution are often underestimated, especially since people quickly become accustomed to excessively loud noises.

The primary function of acoustic panels, namely to reduce noise levels, has a direct impact on stress levels. Noise, especially in the form of constant background noise, can lead to inner restlessness, sleep disturbances, and concentration problems. The sound absorption of acoustic panels noticeably reduces this stress. This creates a quieter and more relaxed environment, which not only promotes mental health but can also reduce physical symptoms such as high blood pressure and tension. Improving room acoustics also contributes to increasing cognitive performance – which is why acoustic panels are often installed in offices. In a less noisy room, it is easier to focus and work productively. And what employer doesn't benefit from employees who can concentrate well and are relaxed at work?

Of course, noise reduction also contributes significantly to less stress in our private lives. Rooms not only appear quieter, but also more comfortable, as annoying echoes and sound reflections are minimized. In this relaxing environment, it's easier to relax and reduce stress. Acoustic panels create not only noise-reduced but also stress-reduced, harmonious spaces in virtually any environment, where people enjoy spending time.

The advantages of acoustic panels from MOMENTO Akustik

MOMENTO Akustik acoustic panels are designed to meet sound class A standards. Strips made of either real wood or MDF are attached to a felt base, offering a natural or colorful finish. Our Holzig Plus range gives you that little extra: instead of the 6mm strips we typically use, we attach 9mm strips to the felt base. The deeper relief structure creates a particularly striking 3D effect on the wall. With all the variety we offer in our shop, it's extremely important to us to also create sustainable products. So, with MOMENTO acoustic panels, you can rely on them to...

Important to know!

Anyone who hasn't yet familiarized themselves with what acoustic panels are and what they do usually comes to us with one or two questions. To save you the hassle of researching, we've summarized the most important information here:

  • Our acoustic panels cannot be installed outdoors. To be effective, they must be used indoors—so they are completely unsuitable for soundproofing between the garden and the highway.
  • Be careful if you plan to use panels in damp rooms. While acoustic panels can be effective here and reduce noise in the room, the humidity in bathrooms, for example, can cause the strips to swell. So, before installing, find out whether your panels are suitable for bathrooms and similar areas. Also, check whether a substructure is required for installing your panels. A substructure creates a cavity between the wall and the panel, where moisture can easily accumulate. Since you're probably trying to improve your well-being, mold in your home would thwart this plan.
  • You don't really need to clean the panels. Simply wipe them occasionally with a slightly damp, soft cloth to remove dust. To maintain the panels, you can regularly rub them with wood oil – only for real wood panels, of course. You can also find detailed instructions for caring for acoustic panels on our blog.
